How to Win a Job with Your Smile
April 24, 2017
(April 24, 2017) – As students graduate from college and begin to enter the workforce, many will be spending the next few months interviewing for their first job. Great Expressions Dental Centers wants all recent graduates to be prepared for success by providing interview tips not commonly considered- including how to win a job with your smile.
According to a study of 2,000 hiring managers, 38 percent said that not smiling is one of the biggest nonverbal mistakes made at job interviews. In fact, 33 percent know whether they are going to hire someone within 90 seconds of meeting them – not leaving much time for more than a smile.
“A common misconception about interviews is that only what you say will be used to determine whether or not you are fit for a job,” said Kristy Loomis, Vice President of Human Resources at Great Expressions Dental Centers. “Non-verbal cues such as posture, eye contact and a smile are also taken into account and help show a potential employer your enthusiasm for the job – something every employer looks for.”
Follow GEDC’s four nonverbal interview tips to ensure you are prepared for your next interview:
- Smile. Smiling is contagious and conveys your personality. Read the room and smile when appropriate, but smiling as much as possible is critical to showing your enthusiasm. Practice your smile in the mirror prior to interviews and be sure to check your teeth before entering the interview.
- Always have a strong handshake. Seven studies have shown that a handshake can improve the quality of an interaction, producing a higher degree of intimacy and trust within a matter of seconds. Furthermore, management experts at the University of Iowa declared handshakes “more important than agreeableness, conscientiousness, or emotional stability.”
- Make appropriate eye contact. Never stare, but good eye contact shows confidence and directness. When making eye contact throughout an interview, be sure to look at each person in the room, avoiding locking eyes with only one person throughout the interview.
- Don’t slouch. Good posture – a straight back with level feet and relaxed shoulders – shows confidence. Slouching in your seat may leave a potential employer thinking that you are uncomfortable and don’t want to be there.
