Celebrating Gum Care Month: Prioritizing Your Periodontal Health

August 29, 2024

Every year, Gum Care Month reminds us all of the importance of maintaining healthy gums. Your gums are an important part of maintaining a healthy smile, and this month we’re focusing on how you can prioritize your periodontal health. Caring for your gums has a lasting impact not just on your oral health, but your overall well-being.

The Importance of Healthy Gums

Your gums play a key role in the overall health of your mouth and body. They support your teeth and help to protect your body from the bacteria in your mouth that can cause inflammation and disease. Periodontal disease, or gum disease, affects many adults and can lead to serious complications such as tooth loss and other health issues like heart disease and diabetes if left untreated.

The primary cause of gum disease is plaque – a sticky, colorless film of bacteria that forms on your teeth. If not removed through daily brushing and flossing, plaque can build up and the bacteria can infect not only your gums and teeth but eventually the gum tissue and bone that support the teeth. This can lead to a chronic inflammatory response that can break down your gums and bone structure, leading to many problems, including tooth loss.

Recognizing the Signs of Gum Disease

The early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis, characterized by red, swollen gums that may bleed when you brush or floss. It’s important to catch gingivitis early because it can usually be reversed with proper gum care. However, if left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more severe form of gum disease.

Signs of periodontitis include:

  • Persistent bad breath
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Tender or bleeding gums
  • Painful chewing
  • Loose teeth
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Gums that have pulled away from your teeth
  • Any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
  • Any change in the fit of partial dentures

If you notice any of these symptoms of poor periodontal health, make an appointment to visit a dentist as soon as possible.

Tips for Caring for Your Gums

Prioritizing your periodontal health through diligent gum care is important to help prevent disease and maintain a healthy smile. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  1. Brush Properly: Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and replace it every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed.
  2. Floss Daily: Flossing is essential for removing plaque and food particles from between your teeth and under the gum line. If you find flossing difficult, try using an interdental cleaner, such as a dental pick, pre-threaded flosser, tiny brushes that reach between the teeth, or a water flosser.
  3. Use Mouthwash: Therapeutic mouthwashes can help reduce plaque, prevent or reduce gingivitis, reduce the speed at which tartar develops, or produce a combination of these effects. Plus, rinsing with mouthwash after brushing and flossing can get into areas that are hard to reach with your toothbrush or floss.
  4. Visit Your Dentist Regularly: Regular visits to a dentist can help prevent gum disease or spot it early when it is easier to treat. During a dental checkup, your dentist or dental hygienist will clean your teeth and can detect any early signs of gum disease.
  5. Quit Smoking: Smoking is strongly associated with the onset of gum disease. Because smoking weakens your immune system, it also makes it harder to fight off a gum infection.
  6. Eat a Balanced Diet: Eating a balanced diet, which is rich in essential nutrients, can help to boost your immune system and protect against gum disease.
