Oral Hygiene Essentials: Key Practices for Dental Health Month
October 2, 2024
October is National Dental Hygiene Month, a perfect time to revisit the fundamental practices of good oral hygiene. This month serves as a reminder of the importance of the daily habits that help keep our teeth and gums healthy.
At Great Expressions Dental Centers (GEDC), we’re committed to educating and assisting our patients in maintaining optimal oral health. Here’s a look at some key practices for good oral hygiene that everyone should embrace.
1. Daily Brushing
Brushing your teeth at least twice a day stands as the cornerstone of good oral hygiene. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to effectively remove plaque—a sticky, colorless film of bacteria that forms on your teeth. Plaque that is not removed by brushing can harden into tartar, which a professional cleaning can only remove.
When brushing, use gentle, circular motions to clean the teeth and gums. Ensure you brush all surfaces of the teeth, your tongue, and the roof of your mouth to remove food particles and bacteria that cause bad breath.
2. Flossing Daily
While brushing is effective at cleaning the visible surfaces of the teeth, flossing reaches where a toothbrush can’t: between the teeth and under the gum line. Daily flossing is essential to remove plaque and food particles from these areas, helping prevent cavities and gum disease.
Ease the floss gently between your teeth and curve it into a ‘C’ shape around each tooth. Move it up and down against the side of each tooth, including under the gum line, to dislodge any trapped food particles and plaque.
3. Rinsing with Mouthwash
Using mouthwash is a supportive step for maintaining oral hygiene. It can reach areas not easily accessed by a toothbrush or floss. Antimicrobial mouth rinses reduce bacteria and plaque activity, which cause gum disease and decay. Fluoride mouth rinses also help reduce and prevent tooth decay.
Look for a mouthwash with therapeutic properties, not just cosmetic ones. Therapeutic mouthwashes help reduce plaque, prevent or reduce gingivitis, reduce the speed that tartar develops, or a combination thereof.
4. Eating a Balanced Diet
What you eat impacts the health of your gums and teeth. Foods high in sugar or starch can contribute to tooth decay. To support oral health, eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy products. These foods provide essential nutrients that help resist infection, including gum disease.
Snacking Smart
If you need to snack, choose foods that do not promote cavities. Fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and cheese are great choices that can actually help to combat tooth decay.
5. Regular Dental Check-ups
Visiting your dentist regularly—generally twice a year—allows early detection and treatment of oral health issues before they become severe. Regular cleanings and exams allow dentists to identify issues like tooth decay, gum disease, and even more serious systemic health issues that manifest symptoms in the mouth.
Preventative Care is Key
Preventative care, including professional dental cleanings and regular exams, is crucial. These visits not only keep your teeth cleaner and your smile brighter but also can significantly decrease the likelihood of developing tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health problems.
6. Changing Your Toothbrush
Many people forget to change their toothbrushes regularly, but it’s an important part of good oral hygiene. Change your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if the bristles become frayed. A worn toothbrush is less effective at cleaning teeth properly.
